Disney California Adventure

 So.  Many.  Churros.

Our experts tested seven different churros at DCA while enjoying a beautiful day and the limited capacity crowd before things get back to normal.

First was the "Milk and Cookies" churro from the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land.  The topping was essentially Oreo dust and it came with a cream dipping sauce.  It was okay, the sauce did not do much for it and the caramel sauce might be a better choice.

Next up were the two churros from the SeƱor Buzz Churro cart at Pixar Pier.  The red was the "Caliente" which was dusted in a cinnamon mix that was similar to red hots or big red gum in flavor.  The regular looking churro was the "Cinnamon Super Galaxy" variant which was basically a regular topping with a few larger multi-colored granules of sugar.  Both were good and the caliente was something of a pleasant surprise.

After lunch, we tried the "Strawberry Cheesecake" churro from the Fairfax Market in Hollywood Land.  This was a disappoinment.  While strawberry drizzle is never a bad idea, the cheesecake flavored goo smelled weird and made it worse.  Strawberry only wouild have probably been better.

In the afternoon, were able to gain access to the new Avengers Campus and enjoy the new Spiderman ride.  On a brief aside, the new land is fairly immersive and they were able to pack a fair amount into a relatively small space.  The one churro offering was at the Terran Treats cart where they have "Sweet Spiral Rations" of various colors which are meant to be reminiscent of infinity stones.  This season's offering is green which has a pineapple flavoring - part of the gag is that the flavors won't match up with the coloring.  It did indeed taste like pineapple.

As the day wound down, we still had a couple more churros to test.  The churro cart next to the (currently closed) Redwood Creek Challenge Trail had the "S'mores" churro.  This was been the best one we tested all day.  It had a marshmallow sauce, chocolate syrup, graham cracker crumbles and chocolate chips on a regular churro.

Finally, we had the "Fluffernutter" churro from Willie's Churros cart on Buena Vista Street.  Similar to the S'mores churro, it had a marshmallow sauce and chocolate chips.  It also had a peanut butter sauce.  Overall, it was quite tasty.

Our final rankings on the day are as follows:

  1. S'mores
  2. Caliente
  3. Fluffernutter
  4. Super Galaxy (or plain)
  5. Milk and Cookies
  6. Sweet Spiral Ration
  7. Strawberry Cheesecake
The Spiral Ration might improve its ranking as the other five flavors are introduced.  Interestingly enough, the plain churro is in the middle of the rankings.  Next month we'll go to Disneyland and sample the various churros there.

Moreno's

A little backstory: Before starting this blog, last month I happened to have a churro at Disneyland and later some at Moreno's, a longtime restaurant in Orange.  These simple joys led me to the "Ah-ha" moment to evolve from an occasional churro consumer to a churro enthusiast with the goal of becoming the world's leading expert in churros.  Baby steps, right?

Last night I had ocasion to revist Moreno's and sample their churros again.  And once again, I was pleased.  The churros were hot all the way through, had good crunch but were soft in the middle.  It came with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces and left cinnamon and sugar all over the table.  Very consistent and exactly like the last time I was here.

This, however, is where I start to wonder about things.  Are they too consistent?  For example, they are all very straight and even in length - did they come from a factory somewhere?  (This is also my suspicion with Disneyland.)  And should that matter?  Part of me thinks so.  But part of me worries that knowing too much could impair my enjoyment of things that are otherwise very pleasing.  In the end, I have concluded that I will have to know.  This is, after all, Churrology which means science comes first.

Churros Don Abel

Made our second official venture out over the Memorial Day Weekend.  We hit the Churros Don Abel truck in Garden Grove.  We got a small bag of 10 churros, a small cajeta and a champurrado.  All were delicious.

Things for the to-do list:

  • Develop evaluation metrics
  • Take more photos
  • Learn to stop worrying and have a churro

Churrology

The dream is one step closer to reality.  Once we can get all of this to work, then we can have churros.
